AGU, Abdullah Gül University, incoming, international students, health insurance, turkey, SGKIt is mandatory for all students to have health insurance coverage from the first day of their arrival at the University.

You have two options:

Opt for a private health insurance of your choice (covering you internationally, or at least in Turkey, from the very first day of your arrival and for the whole academic year). If you choose this option, you won't be able to switch to the State Health Insurance (option 2) for the rest of your stay in Turkey.

Please note that NO TRAVEL INSURANCE will be accepted.

Apply, with our help, for the General Health Insurance at the SGK*, the State Health Institution (recommended option). The General Health Insurance at the SGK costs around 71TL/month** (855TL/year** to be paid at once at the beginning of each academic year).

If you choose the 2nd option, we will start the General Health Insurance application process once you arrive in AGU. As obtaining the Turkish General Health Insurance may take up to 3-4 months, it is mandatory for all international students to subscribe to (and show proof of) international health insurance coverage (or at least for Turkey) in order to register to the Abdullah Gül University. Your international health insurance coverage should be valid for at least 3 months following registration at AGU (until January 1st, following your Fall registration), to cover you until your SGK insurance coverage becomes active. If you have difficulties finding such insurance, you can ask the AGU International Office for assistance (

Please note that NO TRAVEL INSURANCE will be accepted.

Note: Having a private or State insurance certificate is also a required step for your Residence Permit application process.

Some notes about SGK General Health Insurance (GHI):

  • Students who are covered by GHI may apply to state and university hospitals with their Foreign National Number as long as they have paid their premium.
  • No payment is required at state and university hospitals. Therefore, it is recommended that all international students register for GHI.
  • The patient share for medications is 20%. Coverage of expenses for eyeglasses etc. is in accordance with the Directive for Health Applications.
  • Students have to pay a balance if they choose to go to a private hospital. This balance may be different at each hospital. The patient share for medications is 20%.
  • Students holding a Turkish Residency Permit for more than 6 months will automatically be registered at the Turkish Social Security Institution through the centralized system.
  • The insurance will be valid until the end of the academic year. Students usually receive an SGK number upon the registration at the health authority. If your country has Bilateral Social Security Agreements that means your insurance in your country is also valid in Turkey.
